Aaron Rodgers Reveals Family Struggles And Healing In New Netflix Docuseries
Aaron Rodgers, the renowned 41-year-old 4x NFL MVP quarterback, is opening up about his long-documented family dysfunction in his new Netflix docuseries, Aaron Rodgers: Enigma. In one of the rare moments where he discusses his personal life publicly, Rodgers dives deep into the struggles that led him to re-parent himself and seek healing.
In the second episode of the three-part series, Rodgers candidly shares how the turbulence in his family dynamic forced him to provide the emotional support he longed for during his youth. He reflects, “At times when you have some dysfunction or separation in your family life, you have to kind of re-parent yourself and give yourself what you didn’t get or wanted to hear more of when you were a kid.”
Rodgers describes a pivotal need to acknowledge his accomplishments, both on and off the field, stating, “I just wanted to hear, ‘I’m proud of you.’” He emphasizes the importance of self-compassion, adding, “Hey, f** being perfect. I'm proud of who you are and what you’ve accomplished.”
The family rift, as Rodgers explains, stretches back to high school and college years. He chose to remain silent, believing that discretion was best. However, the distance became public in 2016 when his younger brother, Jordan, appeared on The Bachelorette and pointedly highlighted Aaron's absence during a family dinner scene.
Rodgers criticizes this display, saying, “They go on a bull*** show and leave two empty chairs... my brother just went on to get famous.”
Adding another layer, Aaron touches on the rigid religious environment of his upbringing. He describes growing up in a “very white, dogmatic church” and how its inflexible structure didn’t resonate with him. As for his healing journey, Rodgers credits “plant medicine” for helping him process and move forward.
While the docuseries gives a rare glimpse into Rodgers' personal struggles, his family, including his parents, has yet to comment on the revelations.
