Bill Hader Got Fired From Movie Theater Job For Spoiling "Titanic" To Some Sorority Girls — And He Has No Regrets

When I was in film school over twenty years ago in Vancouver I worked at a movie theater on Granville where I met many actors that I would always give a free popcorn box to. I remember the nicest was Robert Forrester who had a ten minute conversation with me about working with Quentin Tarantino on Jackie Brown.

Before Emmy-winning turns in Barry and beloved sketch work on Saturday Night Live, Bill Hader was just another guy working at a movie theater—until one unforgettable encounter got him fired in the most hilarious way.

Appearing on Netflix’s Everybody’s in L.A. With John Mulaney, Hader shared a story that feels straight out of a dark comedy. Back in the late '90s, he was a young usher working a screening of Titanic—yes, that Titanic. A sorority group had bought out the theater, and when Hader politely asked them to step aside, they mocked him, saying he looked like “Charles Manson.”

In full petty-hero form, Hader decided to strike back. As he tore their tickets, he coolly dropped the ultimate spoiler: “Enjoy the movie. The boat sinks at the end. Leo dies.” The girls, in disbelief, tried to call his bluff, but Hader doubled down: “You think he’s asleep. But he’s frozen.”

Of course, his manager caught wind of the situation. But even while firing him, the manager couldn’t help but smile. “He loved it. Couldn’t look me in the eye, though,” Hader recalled.

It’s a classic tale of low-stakes revenge, but also a reminder of just how much Titanic’s ending has stayed with us. The debate over whether Jack could’ve fit on the door with Rose still rages on, though director James Cameron recently settled it (sort of) with a scientific study confirming: only one could survive.

As for Hader, his journey from ticket-tearer to TV icon just adds another layer to his unique brand of humor. One thing’s clear: even when he was getting fired, he knew how to land a punchline.
