Brian Cox has again shared his disapproval of Jeremy Strong’s immersive Method acting approach on Succession. Despite acknowledging Strong’s remarkable portrayal of Kendall Roy, Cox expressed that the intense technique strained relationships on set.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, Cox praised Strong’s Emmy-winning performance but noted that his dedication to staying in character was challenging for the ensemble. "He was wonderful to act with. I had no argument with Jeremy’s acting," Cox stated. However, he added, “He would be an even better actor if he just got rid of that, so there would be much more inclusiveness in what he did.”

When asked if Strong's commitment to his role caused difficulties, Cox didn’t mince words: “It’s not good for the ensemble. It creates hostility. That’s the problem.”

Cox, known for his blunt honesty, has previously criticized the Method acting approach, saying, “I don’t hold a lot of the American shit, having to have a religious experience every time you play a part.” He’s expressed concern for Strong’s well-being, noting that constant immersion could lead to burnout. “You can’t live in it. Eventually, you get worn out.”

Jeremy Strong, in response to past criticisms, has emphasized his respect for his co-stars and dedication to the craft. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Strong stated, “I take my character as seriously as I take my own life,” while acknowledging the strain the approach may cause. “We’re a family in every sense of the word,” he said, referring to the Succession cast.

While Cox and Strong differ in their acting philosophies, the show’s success speaks to the power of both methods. Strong’s immersive approach delivered a character as complex as Kendall Roy, while Cox’s traditional style brought Logan Roy’s authority to life. These contrasts may have fueled Succession’s dynamic tension, creating one of television’s most compelling family dramas.

As Cox continues to voice his skepticism of Method acting, his critiques highlight a broader debate in the acting world: how far should one go for the sake of performance, and at what cost to collaboration?
