A day ago I posted about my dislike of method actors not because of their dedication to the craft of acting but because they usually make life difficult for the other actors and crew where they have to be rude and problematic. Apparently Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight was the exception as crew have said he was friendly and normal between takes.
In a heartfelt interview on The Breakfast Club, Black Panther director Ryan Coogler shared new insight into the late Chadwick Boseman’s extraordinary dedication to his craft. While filming the Marvel blockbuster, Boseman didn’t just play King T’Challa — he became him.
According to Coogler, Boseman stayed in character on and off camera, speaking in T’Challa’s Wakandan accent for the entire shoot. “Disney execs came to see us on ‘Panther,’” Coogler recalled. “It was week two and they were freaked out. I was like, ‘Don’t be freaked out. He’s working, man. He don’t turn it off until we wrap.’”
Boseman’s immersive process didn’t just impress execs — it inspired his co-stars, especially Michael B. Jordan, who portrayed Killmonger. Coogler said Boseman’s quiet strength and professionalism had a lasting effect. “Chad changed my life,” Coogler said. “He was the kind of teacher you didn’t know was teaching. It was all by example.”
Boseman, who passed away in 2020 after a private battle with colon cancer, continues to be a creative north star for Coogler and Jordan. During development of Sinners, their upcoming film, Coogler said he often asked, “What would Chad do in this role?”
Black Panther was more than a movie — it was a movement. And thanks to Boseman’s unforgettable presence, its legacy endures.
