What film did you wish was completely shot in IMAX? Practical effects films like Titanic and Inception are on top of my list.
In a groundbreaking cinematic feat, Christopher Nolan’s upcoming Greek myth epic The Odyssey is officially the first feature film ever shot entirely in IMAX. Set to hit theaters on July 17, 2026, the Warner Bros.-backed production is already rewriting the rules of large-format filmmaking.
Nolan, known for revolutionizing blockbuster visuals with IMAX sequences since The Dark Knight (2008), has pushed boundaries further than ever before. While previous films like Dunkirk utilized around 70% IMAX footage, filming an entire movie in the format was long considered impractical—until now.
Speaking at the Cannes press lunch, IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond revealed that Nolan directly challenged the company: “Chris called me up and said, ‘If you can figure out how to solve the problems, we’ll make The Odyssey 100% in IMAX.’ And that’s what we’re doing.”
To meet this demand, IMAX developed next-gen cameras that are 30% quieter and significantly lighter—solving key issues with sound and portability. New film processing methods also ensure quicker turnaround for dailies, streamlining production.
This landmark achievement not only sets The Odyssey apart but signals a new era for premium theatrical experiences. Other upcoming IMAX titles include Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Sinners, and Greta Gerwig’s Narnia, which will enjoy a 28-day exclusive run in IMAX theaters.
As anticipation builds for The Odyssey, Nolan once again proves why he remains one of cinema’s most visionary directors.
