My favorite all time sports games are Blades Of Steel and Mike Tyson's Punch Out on the first Nintendo and Joe Montana's Football on Sega Genesis.

David O. Russell is back—and with a bang. The acclaimed yet controversial director is set to helm Madden, a film centered not on football plays, but on the origin of the iconic Madden NFL video game franchise.

Slated to begin filming next month in Atlanta, Madden will star Christian Bale as former Raiders owner Al Davis and Nicolas Cage as legendary coach-turned-commentator John Madden. The film, backed by Amazon/MGM, also features Sienna Miller, Kathryn Hahn, and John Mulaney in what’s expected to be another star-studded ensemble—Russell’s signature style.

Originally penned by Cambron Clark, the script landed on the Blacklist before Russell rewrote it, ultimately taking sole screenwriting credit. Rather than a traditional sports biopic, Madden is described as a “video game movie” that chronicles Madden’s departure from the NFL and his groundbreaking collaboration with EA Sports. The narrative will also explore his rivalry with Joe Montana during the race to create the definitive football video game.

Cage steps into a role previously linked to Will Ferrell and Hugh Jackman, as the project gains serious momentum. Despite recent setbacks—Amsterdam being a prime example—Russell continues to attract A-list talent, even amid lingering industry controversy.

With Madden, Russell aims to fuse sports history and pop culture in a way that could redefine the sports drama genre.
