As a video editor I've noticed with friends/colleagues that the editing programs DaVinci Resolve and Adobe Premiere Pro is split with Videographers using Adobe and Film Editors using DaVinci.
Just ahead of NAB 2025, Blackmagic Design unveiled DaVinci Resolve 20, its biggest update yet—boasting more than 100 new features designed to streamline and elevate the editing process. With a heavy focus on artificial intelligence, the new release introduces tools that make editing faster, smarter, and more intuitive.
Among the standout AI-powered features are :
AI IntelliScript, which builds timelines from a text script.
AI Multicam SmartSwitch, which dynamically edits multi-camera footage based on who’s speaking.
AI Audio Assistant can generate a polished audio mix in a single click, while
AI Detect Music Beats auto-marks beat points to sync visuals with rhythm-heavy soundtracks.
AI Set Extender, a groundbreaking tool that uses text prompts to auto-fill scenes, extend backgrounds, and repair cropped footage—perfect for filling in visual gaps or creating immersive environments.
Beyond AI, users will notice massive enhancements to usability and collaboration. Updates include dynamic layout adjustments for vertical videos, improved Blackmagic Cloud tools, and new voiceover palettes and keyframe editors in the cut and edit pages. There's also a full audio mixer on the cut page for precision sound editing.
On the color page, the new chroma warp function allows nuanced hue and saturation adjustments with intuitive stroke and point-based controls. Meanwhile, the 3D Dome light tool enhances 3D and VR workflows with realistic ambient lighting using HDRI images.
For audio pros, Fairlight now includes EQ Match and Level Matcher, making it easier to blend clips seamlessly and maintain tonal consistency across scenes.
Whether you’re a solo creator or part of a collaborative team, DaVinci Resolve 20 brings powerful AI and thoughtful workflow tools to help editors spend less time on tedium and more time crafting their vision.
