What characters teaming up were you most excited to see in the Avengers films?
James Gunn, director of the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, recently revealed he made a firm creative decision to exclude Thor from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, despite the Avengers: Endgame post-credit scene teasing the Asgardian God joining the Guardians.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Gunn explained, “I said in the script notes: ‘I’m not gonna put him in. I don’t want to have Thor in the Guardians.’” His reason was simple yet candid: “I don’t understand the character that much. I love watching his movies and I love Chris Hemsworth, but I don’t know how to write Thor.”
Though Marvel’s timeline hinted at an intergalactic team-up, Gunn stuck to his vision. Instead, Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi absorbed the responsibility of bridging Thor’s narrative with the Guardians, giving Gunn complete creative freedom for his trilogy’s conclusion.
Reflecting on another continuity challenge, Gunn admitted regret over Guardians Vol. 2’s post-credit tease of Adam Warlock. “It was like fitting a square peg into a round hole,” he said, acknowledging the difficulty of fulfilling a setup he hadn’t fully planned for.
Ultimately, Gunn’s steadfastness ensured Guardians Vol. 3 remained his authentic vision—free from characters he didn’t connect with, and true to the tone and story he had crafted from the beginning. Comment below with your thoughts.
