What Keanu Reeves film do you want to see a sequel to? Speed? The Matrix? Or is it one we thought would never happen cause Reeves' main character died in the previous film?
The John Wick universe is officially going global—and animated. At this year’s CinemaCon, Lionsgate dropped some major news: Keanu Reeves is confirmed to return in John Wick 5, continuing the saga of the deadly, dog-loving assassin. This announcement came alongside two exciting expansions to the franchise—a Caine spinoff film directed by Donnie Yen and an animated prequel diving into Wick’s infamous “Impossible Task.”
Reeves, who will first appear in the upcoming spinoff Ballerina (led by Ana de Armas and hitting theaters June 6), reunites with director Chad Stahelski and producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee for the next mainline John Wick installment. While plot details are under wraps, the team is promising a fresh take worthy of the character’s legacy.
Donnie Yen, who debuted as the blind assassin Caine in John Wick: Chapter 4, will direct and star in his own film centered on the character. Set to begin production in Hong Kong later this year, the spinoff explores Caine’s life after breaking free from the High Table. Described as a modern-day kung-fu epic with Yen’s signature cinematic flair, the film aims to expand the franchise’s East-meets-West action style.
Meanwhile, the animated prequel will dive deep into John Wick’s past—specifically the night he completed the Impossible Task to escape his assassin’s life for love. Keanu Reeves will lend his voice to the role, with Ultraman: Rising director Shannon Tindle at the helm and Game of Thrones writer Vanessa Taylor penning the screenplay. The film targets a mature audience and promises a visually rich exploration of the Wick mythology.
With Ballerina on the horizon, John Wick 5 in development, and bold storytelling moves like the anime prequel and Caine spinoff, the franchise is evolving into a full-blown action universe. Lionsgate is clearly betting big on the brand—and with Reeves, Yen, and a slate of talented creators onboard, fans are in for an adrenaline-fueled ride.
