Back in 2022, the announcement that Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard and his longtime writing partner Simon Barrett were developing a Face/Off sequel stirred major excitement. The condition? The sequel would only happen if the original stars, Nicolas Cage and John Travolta, reprised their roles.

Wingard made it clear during a chat with The Fourth Wall Podcast: "The only way we’re going to do this really is if we get the original cast… This has to feel like the ultimate follow-up to the original film."

Now, according to insider Daniel Richtman, that wish is being fulfilled. Cage and Travolta are set to return, though possibly in supporting roles. The sequel reportedly focuses on the children of Castor Troy (Cage) and Sean Archer (Travolta), who are destined to "face off" in their own high-stakes battle. How this works when at the end of film Archer adopted Troy's son Michael and was welcomed into the family including by his daughter Jamie (Dominique Swain) is unknown.

How Can Cage Return?

Fans of the original 1997 Face/Off will remember that Castor Troy met an explosive end, impaled by a harpoon. But according to Barrett, Castor Troy may not have been as dead as we thought. In his words: "I never personally thought Castor Troy died at the end of Face/Off. When you watch it now… they load him onto an ambulance without covering him with a sheet. That signals he’s alive."

This clever loophole opens the door for Cage’s return, and given the original's wild, adrenaline-fueled energy, it seems only fitting.

Production Timeline?

While no official start date has been announced, Travolta’s schedule is relatively open, and Cage’s commitments are surprisingly light. If all aligns, production could kick off sooner than we think.

Adam Wingard’s creative vision — baked by his recent Godzilla x Kong success and indie horror hits like You’re Next and The Guest — gives hope that Face/Off 2 will capture the off-the-wall magic of the original. Though we may not see John Woo return to direct, Wingard and Barrett are set on delivering an authentic sequel, not just a cash grab.

One thing’s for sure: with Cage and Travolta back, Face/Off 2 promises to be a wild ride.
