What started as an eyebrow-raising April Fool’s headline is now confirmed reality: David Fincher, Brad Pitt, and Quentin Tarantino are joining forces for a sequel/spin-off to 2019’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The project, originally shrouded in mystery as Tarantino’s supposed tenth and final film The Movie Critic, has evolved into a continuation of Pitt’s fan-favorite character, stuntman Cliff Booth.
According to The Playlist, Tarantino opted not to direct the film but didn’t want the screenplay sitting idle. Instead, he handed it off to Fincher—who has a first-look deal with Netflix. The streaming giant quickly jumped on board, reportedly greenlighting a staggering $200 million budget.
Over $20 million has already been spent acquiring the script, signaling Netflix’s confidence in the project’s blockbuster potential.
With Fincher set to direct and Pitt reprising his role, both have cleared their schedules to prioritize the film. Production is fast-tracked for a July shoot in California, a move that adds urgency and excitement to the project.
So far, no additional cast has been confirmed, though rumors suggest Leonardo DiCaprio might be in talks to return as fading actor Rick Dalton. Meanwhile, Margot Robbie’s camp has signaled she’s “available if needed,” leaving the door open for a potential cameo as Sharon Tate.
Industry insiders like The Insneider and Deadline have verified the project’s legitimacy, although caution remains—particularly regarding DiCaprio’s involvement, which is still in flux. But one thing’s for sure: this dream-team reunion of Fincher, Tarantino (as writer), and Pitt is shaping up to be one of the most buzzworthy Hollywood events in years.
