The Arrowverse officially came to a close tonight with the emotionally charged series finale of Superman & Lois, bringing a decade-long superhero saga to an end. This groundbreaking finale, which aired on The CW, not only marked the conclusion of the Man of Steel's TV journey but also left an indelible mark on the genre with its daring narrative choices and poignant resolutions.

A Finale Unlike Any Other

Superman & Lois dared to go where no other Superman-themed TV series or movie had ventured: depicting the deaths of both Lois Lane and Clark Kent. This bold decision brought the story full circle, offering fans a deeply moving exploration of legacy, love, and sacrifice.

The finale began with Superman’s final battle against his greatest adversaries—Doomsday, now merged with the sun, and Lex Luthor, sharing a prison cell with Bruno Mannheim.

The storyline then fast-forwarded over 30 years to reveal the passing of Lois due to cancer and Clark’s subsequent life, which he spent in quiet solitude with a faithful dog, Krypto. Ultimately, Clark's reflection on life—centered on themes of joy, hope, forgiveness, friendship, and love—culminated in a touching reunion with Lois in the afterlife, symbolized by her iconic red dress.

Hope Amid Heartache

The series finale balanced heartache with hope, emphasizing the enduring bond between its characters. Lana Lang and John Henry Irons tied the knot, while Kyle and Chrissy welcomed a growing family. The younger generation, including Jonathan and Jordan Kent and Natalie Irons, stepped up as heroes in their own right, ready to carry on Superman’s legacy.

As co-showrunners Todd Helbing and Brent Fletcher explained, the finale’s ethereal and optimistic tone was a deliberate choice. Rather than dwelling on darkness, the ending celebrated the light and love that Clark and Lois brought to their world and the lives they touched.

Memorable Highlights

The finale featured several standout moments that delighted fans:

  • David Giuntoli's unexpected cameo as an older Jonathan Kent, adding a personal touch to the series’ farewell.

  • Krypto, the beloved Superdog, symbolizing companionship and joy in Clark’s later years.

  • The surprising poignancy of Doomsday’s redemption arc, where he sacrificed himself to save the world.

  • Clark forgiving Lex Luthor in the the afterlife.

A Real Fan's Thoughts

Hartley Holmberg, a long time comic book fan who counts Superman as his favorite hero had these comments:

"I’d add that the show was the perfect love letter to Superman. They gave us the single most comic accurate take on the character to date. From Steel and his daughter, a Doomsday that actually looks like Doomsday, Bizarro and then throwing in the Two Superboy costumes in the finale was the icing on the cake. I think my all time favourite fan service moment on the show was when they paid Homage to Superman's first appearance in Action Comics # 1 (1938) and had him say “Thanks, my mom made it” when a bystander tells him his costume is cool."

Vancouver Film Industry

The end of the Arrowverse has had a noticeable impact on Vancouver's film industry, often dubbed "Hollywood North," which served as the primary production hub for these shows. For over a decade, the series brought consistent work to local crews, actors, and businesses, creating a thriving ecosystem that relied heavily on the steady output of these productions.

With their interconnected narratives and numerous spin-offs, the Arrowverse ensured year-round filming schedules, boosting the local economy and solidifying Vancouver as a go-to location for superhero television.

Since the conclusion of The Flash and now Superman & Lois, the industry has experienced a downturn in large-scale productions of this nature, leading to fewer jobs and reduced activity for ancillary services like equipment rentals, catering, and post-production facilities. The absence of these flagship series has left a void, challenging the city to attract comparable projects to sustain its vibrant filmmaking community.

A Fitting Farewell

As the Arrowverse bids farewell, Superman & Lois leaves behind a legacy of innovation and emotional storytelling. By intertwining grounded family dynamics with epic superhero narratives, the series redefined what it means to be a hero.

The finale wasn’t just the end of Superman & Lois—it was a heartfelt goodbye to an era of interconnected superhero tales that captivated audiences for over a decade.
