Social anxiety is something that easily happens on the first day of film sets when your meeting thirty plus crew members who all want to give the best first impression. Imagine now the pressures actors face when they have to be on camera and not only be aware of their appearance but their performance in front of all these new people.

In a recent appearance on the Reign With Josh Smith podcast, Hayley Atwell opened up about a transformative moment with her Mission: Impossible co-star Tom Cruise. Known for her role as Grace in Dead Reckoning, Atwell shared how Cruise helped her combat social anxiety in Hollywood with a surprisingly simple piece of advice: “If you’re scared of something, just keep looking at it.”

Atwell, who has faced moments of insecurity in high-pressure environments, described how social anxiety can trigger spirals of self-doubt. “I start to overthink and go: ‘Do I look weird? Do I seem awkward?’” she explained. But Cruise encouraged her to do the opposite of retreating inward.

Instead, Cruise told her to scan the room and identify what might be triggering the anxiety. Is it someone who reminds you of a past experience? A fear of judgment? “As soon as I can name what it actually is,” Atwell said, “the general sense of free-floating anxiety goes.” Naming the source, she explained, gives power back to the individual and opens a path to action.

Cruise’s approach—curiosity over avoidance—offered Atwell a new way to manage fear. “Just keep looking at it,” he told her. “It will often give you information about what to do to overcome it.”

Beyond his legendary action stunts, Cruise proved to be a supportive and insightful collaborator. Atwell praised him as “very kind, very professional,” and someone who creates a safe environment for creativity. “Tom really likes people to thrive on set.”

Their strong on-screen chemistry was one of the most praised elements of Dead Reckoning, and fans can expect more of their dynamic in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning releasing this summer.
