Buzz around Season 3 of “The White Lotus” isn’t just about the drama on screen. Walton Goggins, who played Rick Hatchett, just opened up about the emotional toll of his acting method — and it’s turning heads.

While Jason Isaacs previously described filming in Thailand as “an open prison camp,” Goggins has now added his own perspective, detailing how his immersive approach to character work left some castmates puzzled. In a candid interview, he explained that he mirrored his character’s isolation in real life, which made the experience “emotionally difficult.”

Goggins described acting as a “spiritual practice,” saying, “I believe storytelling is a kind of religion… I wouldn’t wear sweats to church; I’d show up ready to be saved.” He admitted that while some fellow actors couldn’t grasp why he didn’t break character between takes, he remains devoted to his craft: “This is the drug,” he said. “I take it all seriously. Comedy, drama — how many of these chances will I have?”

One moment that stood out during filming, Goggins recalled, was a conversation with a fellow cast member who praised his performance in Fallout and asked if he had fun making it.

Goggins simply stared back before replying, “No. I play a guy who’s lived for 200 years and seen the worst of humanity. Every day was fucking horrible. He just stared back at me like: ‘OK, wow.'" The interaction, he said, revealed a disconnect — not everyone on set understood his deep commitment to embodying the emotional truth of his roles. “If you don’t give yourself over to it,” Goggins said, “you’re missing something profound in this work.”

This isn't new for Goggins, who once walked the streets of New Orleans in high heels nightly to prepare for his role as Venus Van Dam in Sons of Anarchy. His commitment earned praise from the show’s creator for its authenticity and respect toward the transgender community.

Walton’s comments offer a powerful reminder of the passion and complexity behind the scenes — and why he remains one of Hollywood’s most respected character actors.
