In one of the most surprising page-to-screen developments in recent memory, a short story first posted on Reddit is now set to become a feature film — starring Sydney Sweeney and written by legendary screenwriter Eric Roth.

The original story, titled “I pretended to be a missing girl so I could rob her family,” was written by high school English teacher Joe Cote and published on Reddit’s r/nosleep forum four years ago. Its unnerving plot struck a chord with readers, sparking a fierce bidding war that ultimately saw Warner Bros. secure the rights. The film is still seeking a director, but with Sweeney and Roth attached, expectations are sky-high.

Cote’s story centers on a mysterious young woman who arrives at a grieving family's home a decade after their teenage daughter disappeared. Claiming to be the long-lost girl, her presence forces the family to confront hope, deception, and devastating emotional truths. The twist? She may not be who she says she is — and she might not be alone in her scheme.

Eric Roth, the Oscar-winning writer behind Forrest Gump, Munich, and Dune, is set to adapt the story for the screen. Roth’s involvement signals the project’s prestige, though reports suggest he might alter the story’s shocking ending.

As for Sydney Sweeney, her star continues to rise. After breaking through with HBO’s Euphoria, she’s taken on a diverse slate of roles in films like Anyone But You and Immaculate, and she’s also set to portray boxing legend Christy Martin in an upcoming biopic.

This project blends internet-born horror with Hollywood firepower — a sign of how digital storytelling is increasingly influencing the entertainment industry’s biggest players.
