Searchlight and Lionsgate have officially tapped Elvis and Dune: Part Two star Austin Butler to portray Patrick Bateman in a fresh adaptation of American Psycho, directed by Luca Guadagnino. This new film promises to offer a unique interpretation of Bret Easton Ellis’ infamous 1991 novel, steering away from the celebrated 2000 adaptation led by Christian Bale.

Rumors initially suggested Jacob Elordi was in the running, but Butler secured the coveted role. The story follows Patrick Bateman, a wealthy, vain, and deeply disturbed Manhattan investment banker who leads a double life as a violent serial killer. The novel shocked readers with its graphic depictions of violence, prompting censorship in several countries.

While details of Guadagnino’s vision remain under wraps, his track record with films like Challengers and Call Me by Your Name suggests a bold, character-driven approach. Screenwriter Scott Z. Burns (Contagion) is adapting the script, which likely means a modern twist on Bateman's psychotic escapades.

Interestingly, Butler will be the third actor to portray Patrick Bateman as Casper Van Dien played him in Ellis' Rules of Attraction, where James Van Der Beek played Bateman's younger brother, Sean.

With American Psycho’s previous film grossing over $34 million on a modest $7 million budget and developing a cult following, expectations are high. Butler's rising star power and Guadagnino's distinct storytelling could breathe new life into this chilling narrative.
