Wrestling Legend Reveals The Inside Scoop On His 1997 Guest Appearance
Bret Hart, the "Excellence of Execution" and WWE Hall of Famer, holds a unique spot in wrestling and pop culture history. While John Cena recently grabbed headlines for appearing on The Simpsons, Hart was the first WWE legend to make a cameo on the beloved animated series. His appearance on the 1997 episode “The Old Man and the Lisa” is fondly remembered by wrestling fans, but as Hart recently revealed in an interview with The Wrestling Classic, his Simpsons role could have been very different.
A Role Intended for Someone Else
Hart's 1997 appearance was a major honor for the wrestler, who had been a longtime fan of the show. However, when Hart was initially approached for the cameo, the producers didn’t plan to have him voice himself. Instead, Hart was cast to play a generic wrestler called “The Mad Viking,” a character far removed from his actual persona. Hart shared, “I remember I wanted to be Bret Hart on the show. And they said, ‘No, it’s just a part for a wrestler.’”
Hart's task was to bring to life this over-the-top, fictional character. “When I did the voiceover, I was the voice for the Mad Viking. I wasn’t Bret Hart, and it’s a little bit different,” Hart said. Fans of the episode may notice that his voice in the episode doesn’t quite match the calm, authoritative tone wrestling fans are used to. “That’s why when you hear the voiceover, it doesn’t sound like me. I was trying to sound like somebody else.”
A Last-Minute Change of Heart
It wasn’t until the recording session was completed and Hart was leaving the studio that his role changed in a way that solidified his pop culture legacy. After wrapping up his lines, Hart was spotted outside the FOX Studios signing autographs for a crowd of about 300 people. The producers, taken aback by his popularity, realized they were missing an opportunity by not having Hart play himself.
Hart recalls the conversation: “The producer came up to me while I was signing autographs and said, ‘I had no idea you were that famous. We’re gonna draw you in as you.’”
In a rare last-minute change, the Simpsons production team scrapped the Mad Viking character and decided to make Hart a part of the storyline as himself. This decision proved to be the right one, as his cameo became an iconic moment for both wrestling fans and Simpsons enthusiasts.
Bret Hart’s Influence in Pop Culture
This surprise shift from a fictional character to Bret Hart being portrayed as himself on The Simpsons added to his enduring influence in both wrestling and entertainment. At the time, Hart was one of the biggest names in WWE, fresh off multiple WWE Championship reigns and legendary matches. His participation in The Simpsons only helped to expand his fanbase beyond the wrestling ring.
While his cameo was brief, it showcased just how popular pro wrestling had become by the late 1990s. The Simpsons producers’ decision to adjust the role reflected the growing influence of WWE stars like Hart in mainstream culture.
Bret Hart’s Legacy Continues to Grow
More than two decades later, fans still fondly remember Hart’s guest appearance. His anecdote about the spontaneous change to his character provides insight into how guest appearances on major shows can evolve based on a celebrity’s influence.
Although John Cena’s recent appearance on The Simpsons made headlines, it was Bret Hart who paved the way for WWE superstars in Springfield. His story of how his cameo shifted from the Mad Viking to himself reveals that, sometimes, just being yourself is enough to leave a lasting impact.
Fans of both wrestling and The Simpsons continue to celebrate this memorable episode, and Hart's reflections provide a fun glimpse into what could have been a very different cameo.
