Did you ever watch Donald Trump on The Apprentice and wish he would do a show where the contestants were competing to become an American citizen?
A new reality TV concept is under review by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and it’s stirring debate across media and political circles. Titled The American, the show would feature immigrants competing in uniquely "American" challenges for a chance at U.S. citizenship.
The brainchild of Rob Worsoff, known for his work on Duck Dynasty and The Millionaire Matchmaker, The American aims to blend entertainment with patriotism. “It’s not mean-spirited,” Worsoff wrote on Facebook, calling the show “a celebration of what it means to be American.”
DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin confirmed the proposal is in early vetting stages. “The Department receives hundreds of pitches annually,” she said, emphasizing that The American has neither been approved nor denied.
Despite reports from The Daily Mail alleging that Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem is championing the project, McLaughlin denied her involvement. Worsoff also noted he hasn’t spoken to Noem, but said he’s been in discussions with other DHS officials and has floated the idea under multiple administrations.
An immigrant himself from Canada, Worsoff says the show would include challenges like gold mining in San Francisco or assembling a Model T in Detroit. Comment below with your thoughts.
