Which Stephen King novel to film adaptation is your favorite?
Paramount Pictures has tapped acclaimed director Doug Liman (“The Bourne Identity,” “Edge of Tomorrow,” “Road House”) to helm a new film adaptation of Stephen King’s seminal 1978 post-apocalyptic novel, The Stand.
Liman will also produce the one-off feature, marking a bold departure from the sprawling length of King’s original 1,152-page novel. Tyler Thompson (“American Made”) is attached as a producer. The project now moves to the scripting phase.
The Stand tells the gripping story of humanity’s remnants after a devastating virus wipes out most of the U.S. population. As survivors regroup, they face off in a biblical battle between good and evil, with a mysterious, malevolent figure named Randall Flagg at the center.
Unlike prior adaptations, Liman’s version will be a single film—suggesting a leaner, more focused narrative. This contrasts with past screen versions, such as the critically acclaimed 1994 ABC mini-series directed by Mick Garris, and the more recent 2020 CBS All Access series, which received mixed reviews.
Over the decades, several filmmakers—including George A. Romero, Ben Affleck, and David Yates—have attempted to adapt The Stand for the big screen, but none reached fruition.
Currently, Liman is working on Deeper, an underwater supernatural thriller starring Tom Cruise and Ana de Armas. Comment below with your thoughts.
