What was the first social media platform you were on? Was it MySpace? Hi-5? Friendster? Or like most people Facebook? In a nostalgic pivot, Meta is rolling out a new Friends Tab on Facebook that puts the spotlight back on what made the platform popular in the first place: real connections. Starting in the U.S. and Canada, the new tab will offer users a feed filled exclusively with updates from friends and family — a stark contrast to the AI-recommended content that’s dominated social media feeds in recent years.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook app head Tom Alison say the move is part of an intentional return to “OG Facebook” vibes. The Friends Tab will feature photos, text posts, stories, birthdays, and friend requests, providing a dedicated space to catch up with people you actually know — not just influencers and brands.

The change comes after years of Facebook increasingly mirroring platforms like TikTok and Instagram, serving algorithm-curated content to maximize engagement. While those features aren't going away, Meta is acknowledging a growing demand for more personal, meaningful online interactions.

“We’re making sure that there’s still a place for this stuff on Facebook,” said Alison. “It is something that shouldn’t get lost in the modern social media mix.”

As social media evolves into more of a passive viewing experience — think YouTube binge sessions or TikTok scrolling marathons — Facebook’s latest shift serves as a reminder that platforms can still prioritize real relationships. Though the Friends Tab won’t replace the algorithm-driven Home feed, it gives users a clear choice: entertainment or connection.

More updates are expected as Meta continues to redefine what it means for social media to truly be social. For now, the Friends Tab marks a meaningful step toward Facebook’s original purpose — helping people stay connected with the people who matter most.
