A Peek Behind The Cape As New Talent And Old Suits Test The Limits

The legacy of Superman’s iconic suit is as enduring as the character himself. With the upcoming release of James Gunn’s “Superman: Legacy” in summer 2025, excitement swirls not just about David Corenswet stepping into the role, but also about the evolution of the superhero's attire.

The film promises a fresh take, with a suit combining the vibrant colors of the Christopher Reeve era and the sculpted modernity of Henry Cavill’s iteration. Yet, behind-the-scenes costume tests hint at the challenges of living up to Superman's mantle—literally.

From Reeve to Cavill and Beyond

In crafting Corenswet's debut Supersuit, costume designers aimed to strike a balance between tradition and innovation. The classic hues from the Reeve films evoke nostalgia, while the muscular, textured design reflects a modern cinematic edge. These updates, however, come with challenges, especially when previous suits are part of the process.

During costume tests for “Man of Steel,” actors, including Henry Cavill, wore versions of the Christopher Reeve suit to assess their fit for the role. James Gunn opted for a reverse approach—actors vying for the role of Superman in “Legacy” donned Cavill’s suit from “Man of Steel.”

A Suit Stretched to Its Limits

Tom Brittney, known for his role in Grantchester, recently shared insights from his audition process on the Hellish podcast. The actor revealed a memorable, if awkward, encounter with Cavill’s old suit:

“It was actually Henry Cavill’s Superman suit – his actual suit. It takes about half an hour to get into it – to get sewn into it. And yeah, I think I might have accidentally ripped it. I was more muscular than Henry Cavill, that’s the only reason.”

David Corenswet, the ultimate choice for the role, faced similar issues. According to Gunn, Corenswet’s height and build pushed the suit to its breaking point:

“Tom messed it up, and then Corenswet came in [and] he was way too tall, so it just got torn to shreds.”

Praise for the Contenders

Though Corenswet ultimately landed the role, Gunn expressed admiration for Brittney, describing him as “truly one of my favorite actors. Incredibly talented guy.” This camaraderie between director and auditioning talent reflects the supportive environment Gunn cultivates, even amidst the high stakes of casting an icon like Superman.

What’s Next for Superman Fans?

As the countdown to July 11, 2025, continues, fans eagerly await the unveiling of the new Supersuit and Corenswet’s portrayal of the Man of Steel. The mix of legacy and innovation promises to redefine Superman for a new generation, while honoring the rich history of the character.
