James Gunn brought the house down at CinemaCon 2025 with an electrifying first look at Superman, the new DC film he both wrote and directed. Promising a hopeful, human-centered take on the iconic hero, Gunn's Superman is aiming to revive the franchise after years of uneven releases — and based on the footage shown, he's well on his way.

The sneak peek included classic moments of heroism — Superman rescuing civilians, sparring with Lex Luthor (played by Nicholas Hoult), and having heart-to-hearts with Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan). But the breakout star of the footage wasn’t wearing a cape — at least, not a full-sized one.

Enter Krypto, Superman’s loyal super-powered pup. Inspired by Gunn’s own chaotic rescue dog, Krypto brings heart, humor, and high-flying action to the film. One standout scene shows Krypto dragging a bruised Superman to safety in the Fortress of Solitude, then energetically nipping at his heels once the Man of Steel is back on his feet. Fans are already calling him the film’s unexpected MVP.

David Corenswet steps into the role of Clark Kent/Superman, giving the character a fresh and emotionally grounded vibe. The film balances larger-than-life action with themes of compassion, love, and — most of all — hope.

Gunn’s direction signals a shift from the darker Snyder-era DC films to something more heartfelt and optimistic. As Brosnahan put it during the presentation, “These stories are about the power of hope… and the fight for good to conquer evil.”

Superman hits theaters on July 11, and with the buzz already building, DC might just have its long-awaited comeback.
