Could two late-night legends finally reunite? Jay Leno says he’s open to the idea — but admits a reunion with David Letterman “might be awkward.”
In a recent interview on In Depth with Graham Bensinger, Leno said he wouldn’t rule out reconnecting with his longtime rival, though he’s hesitant to make the first move. “Oh, yeah. I would like to do that,” Leno said. “I think I have no problem with it. I think Dave might be awkward.”
Leno emphasized there's no bad blood, just different personalities. “Dave’s a quirky guy,” he explained. “I’m quirky too, just the opposite side of the coin.”
The comedian recalled an unplanned visit to Letterman’s Malibu home with fellow comic Wil Shriner — and how uncomfortable it got. “We thought it’d be fun to surprise him. It was just so awkward,” Leno said. “It’s like, ‘Uh, you want some orange juice?’ ‘No, we’re good.’ We knew right away — mistake.”
The tension between the two dates back to 1992, when Leno was chosen to succeed Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show, a position many assumed would go to Letterman. Their rivalry became pop culture history — and the subject of HBO’s 1996 film The Late Shift.
Despite the past, Leno says he’s not opposed to a reunion, as long as someone else organizes it. “Believe me, if they want to do something, I would do it. But I tend to get my hand bitten when I instigate those kinds of things.”
