Kaitlyn Dever has officially been confirmed as the lead of The Last of Us season 3, co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann revealed during a recent FYC event for the Emmy-contending HBO series. The actress, who joined in season two as Abby — a controversial yet pivotal character — will now take center stage.
“It’s more of a water season than a fire season,” Druckmann teased, with Mazin echoing, “It’s a wetter season than a hotter season,” signaling a tonal and visual shift for the upcoming chapter. Season three will pivot to Abby’s complex journey, following the dramatic conclusion of season two which saw Pedro Pascal’s Joel brutally killed — a moment that sent shockwaves through the fanbase.
Speaking virtually from Australia, Dever expressed her excitement: “It makes me so happy to be part of this family and to look forward to the journey ahead.” Addressing Abby’s divisive role, she added, “The controversy was never a concern after meeting Craig and Neil. I’ve never felt so carried on a set in my life.”
Mazin highlighted the show’s commitment to emotional authenticity: “This isn’t just a story about revenge. It’s about grief — and that means sometimes, the characters we love don’t survive.”
As The Last of Us embraces bolder storytelling and leans into its emotionally charged source material, season three promises a deeper dive into Abby’s perspective — with HBO’s full support behind the creative risks. Comment below if you like the shift in focus. Coment below with your thoughts.
