Which Matrix film is your favorite?
A new chapter in The Matrix franchise is on the horizon. Acclaimed filmmaker Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods, Bad Times at the El Royale) is officially attached to direct a fresh installment of the sci-fi saga for Warner Bros. Discovery.
While it’s still unclear whether the project will be a sequel, reboot, or spin-off, anticipation is building. The biggest development? Insider Daniel Richtman reports that the studio is aiming to bring back Keanu Reeves as Neo, signaling that this could be a continuation rather than a full reset.
The Matrix franchise began in 1999 with a revolutionary film that reshaped cinema. Its two sequels in 2003 divided fans, and 2021’s The Matrix Resurrections struggled to reignite the original’s spark. Goddard, however, brings a fresh vision—and deep reverence for the Wachowskis’ legacy.
“It’s not hyperbole to say The Matrix changed both cinema and my life,” Goddard said. “I’m beyond grateful to tell stories in their world.” Warner Bros. Motion Pictures President Jesse Ehrman echoed that excitement, praising Goddard’s pitch for honoring the past while steering the franchise forward.
Early rumors also suggest pop star Ariana Grande may be in talks for a leading role, adding more intrigue to the developing project.
As of now, no release date has been announced, but with Goddard’s direction and Reeves potentially returning, this new Matrix movie could be the revival fans have been waiting for. Comment below with your choice of favorite Matrix film in the series.
