As a comic book movie fan I have to appreciate what the original X-Men film did in 2000, kickstarting the whole modern superhero era.
Marvel Studios is in early talks with Thunderbolts director Jake Schreier to lead its long-awaited reboot of the X-Men franchise. Schreier's critically praised work on Thunderbolts, which earned strong audience scores and a $74.3 million opening, has positioned him as a top choice for the job.
The script is being written by Michael Lesslie (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes) with Marvel chief Kevin Feige producing. The move follows weeks of behind-the-scenes momentum as Marvel aims to bring the mutants back to the big screen for the first time under Disney.
While the film is still untitled, Marvel has already confirmed several returning cast members, expected to appear in both this and Avengers: Doomsday. However, no announcements have been made regarding the casting of younger versions of classic characters—leaving fans speculating on whether James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender will return.
First introduced in the 1960s by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the X-Men franchise has been a pop culture powerhouse across comics, TV, and film. But after Fox’s later entries underperformed, fans have eagerly awaited a reboot since Disney acquired Fox in 2019.
Marvel has slowly seeded the mutants' return through cameos—most notably Patrick Stewart’s Professor X in Multiverse of Madness and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine. Schreier’s hiring signals Marvel’s trust in directors with proven synergy, as seen with Jon Watts and the Russos.
The X-Men are finally on the comeback trail—with Schreier potentially leading the charge.
