Religious films were thought to be dead until Passion Of The Christ came in 2004 like a prayer smashing records earning $612 million worldwide. After years of delays and speculation, Mel Gibson’s long-awaited sequel is finally heading into production. Titled The Resurrection of the Christ, the film is set to begin filming this August at the renowned Cinecittà Studios in Rome.
The announcement came via Cinecittà CEO Manuela Cacciamani in a conversation with Italian financial outlet Il Sole 24 Ore. Gibson’s Icon Productions is expected to utilize the state-of-the-art Studio 22, the same facility where much of the original 2004 film was shot.
In addition to the studio work, location filming will take place across stunning Southern Italian landscapes, including Matera, Ginosa, Gravina, Laterza, and Altamura — areas known for their historical and biblical resemblance.
Jim Caviezel is rumored to reprise his role as Jesus, and the screenplay — penned by Gibson and long-time collaborator Randall Wallace — reportedly draws from multiple drafts. Early reports suggest the narrative won’t follow a traditional linear structure, instead exploring metaphysical and spiritual realms tied to the resurrection story.
The Resurrection of the Christ marks a highly anticipated return to a cinematic world that stirred global conversation two decades ago. With production now finally on the horizon, fans and critics alike will be watching closely as the project unfolds.
