For a video game adaptation about a man and a woman in a Corvette being chased by the police is there any better director than Michael Bay?

Michael Bay and Sydney Sweeney are set to bring high-octane energy to the big screen with Universal Pictures' adaptation of OutRun, the iconic racing video game franchise from Sega. Bay is confirmed to direct and produce the film, while Sweeney joins as a producer.

The original OutRun, released in 1986, quickly became a Sega staple. Known for its fast-paced gameplay and exotic locations, the game challenges players to dodge traffic and beat the clock. Though plot details remain under wraps, fans can expect the film to reflect Bay's signature action-packed style.

Jayson Rothwell has been tapped to write the screenplay. Bay will produce through Platinum Dunes alongside Brad Fuller, operating under their first-look deal with Universal. On Sega's end, Toru Nakahara will produce, with Sega Corporation president Shuji Utsumi supervising.

The project signals Hollywood's continued embrace of video game IP, following box office wins like The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Minecraft. Universal is also set to release Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 later this year.

Sweeney, whose star power continues to rise, will next appear in Echo Valley on Apple TV+ this June. Bay remains one of the industry's most recognizable action directors, making OutRun a potentially thrilling addition to both their portfolios.
