What is your favorite comic book movie?
The modern comic book film era started in 2000 with X-Men and Spider-Man in 2002. Directed by Bryan Singer and Sam Raimi, these films helped usher in a new wave of grounded superheroes that attracted auter directors and A-list talent, making stars of Hugh Jackman, Tobey Maguire, and Robert Downey Jr.
Everyone has their list of top films, and here are my top three comic book films:
3. Avengers Endgame- This is the perfect film for the cinema experience. The type of movie you need to see with a big crowd. All the plot lines, character arcs and easter eggs teased in earlier films come together in a roaring finale battle scene. Captain America lifting Thor's hammer, Iron Man's visions coming to life, and many others.
The MCU has been a mess in phase 5 Multiverse, but one missing scene from Endgame could be a great film. That is Captain America returning the Infinity Stones to their own timelines.
2. The Dark Knight- I'm not naive enough to not acknowledge this is the best comic book film ever made, bar none. It's the perfect mixture of comic book meet gangster film. Christian Bale is the best Batman, and every character is multi-layered.
While the film is grounded in its own reality, the scene of Bruce Wayne sitting across Alfred in a cafe in Florence, Italy after faking his own death stretches realism. Imagine Elon Musk faking his death to hide from President Trump's tariffs, suddenly out in public with TMZ not there to catch him.
1. Man Of Steel- I put this as my number one even though it's not the best one made, because Superman is my favorite super hero. Henry Cavill is the best Superman, I say, followed by Tom Welling's version in Smallville. The most cinematic scene is his first flight, falling before putting his fist to the ground, and soaring heroically.
My only complaint is the dumb scene where Clark doesn't save his dad from the tornado which only makes sense when you think about what a fool Jonathan Kent was earlier for getting mad Clark saved his classmates from a drowning bus. Kevin Costner also died a lame way in Yellowstone too, so maybe he's that difficult on set that Directors like killing him off.
These films combine storytelling, performance, and vision in unforgettable ways. They each represent a milestone in modern superhero cinema, and why I love movies in the first place.
