When I first watched the new Superman trailer I thought it was fan made or AI when it came to the shot of Nathan Fillion's Green Lantern character Guy Gardner. Wearing a hideous blonde bowl haircut I assumed this was a joke which happens during the day a big movie trailer is released where people put out fake ones. (Its probably the same jerks who after a UFC PPV instead of showing a knockout highlight as their YouTube thumbnail shows, their video is a ten minute video of them talking on a bad webcam about it.)
After debuting as the infamously arrogant Green Lantern, in James Gunn’s Superman this July, Fillion will reprise his role in HBO’s highly anticipated Lanterns series, now officially in production.
Described by Fillion himself as a “jerk” and “not nice,” his take on Gardner allows for a uniquely uninhibited performance. “What is the most selfish, self-serving thing I can do in this moment?” he told TV Guide, highlighting the unfiltered confidence that defines the character. Gardner’s signature overconfidence may be his greatest weapon—or his biggest liability.
The Lanterns series, produced by DC Studios and likened to True Detective in tone, promises a gritty, Earth-based mystery. It pairs legendary Lantern Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) with newcomer John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), both investigating a chilling murder in small-town America. As the series unfolds, expect power struggles, moral ambiguity, and intergalactic politics.
The cast lineup is equally compelling, featuring Kelly Macdonald as a steadfast sheriff, Ulrich Thomsen as the villainous Sinestro, and Poorna Jagannathan as the cunning Zoe. Jason Ritter and Garret Dillahunt also join the ensemble, adding layers to the drama.
With production having started in late February and anticipation building fast, Lanterns is shaping up to be a grounded-yet-cosmic detective saga—anchored by the unpredictable chaos of Fillion’s Guy Gardner. Love him or loathe him, this Green Lantern won’t be ignored. As for his haircut even though the character in the comics has that..well not everything has to be fan service.
