I think everyone has used AI to create an image of either themselves or their favorite celebrity. For my thumbnails on movies and TV shows I prefer using real photos but AI ones seems to work better for posts on technology.

OpenAI’s latest image generation tool, built into GPT-4o, has set social media ablaze with users creating Studio Ghibli-style portraits, landscapes, and fantasy scenes. The tool’s ability to replicate the iconic hand-drawn, whimsical look of the Japanese animation powerhouse has drawn praise—and controversy.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, joined in on the trend, posting a humorous reaction on X (formerly Twitter):“> be me / > grind for a decade trying to help make superintelligence to cure cancer or whatever / > … wake up one day to hundreds of messages: ‘look i made you into a twink ghibli style haha.’”Altman even updated his profile pic to a Ghibli-style version of himself, further fueling the viral moment.

While fans are loving the AI-generated art, not everyone is celebrating. Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki, a long-time critic of AI in art, once called AI-generated animation “an insult to life itself.” His stance echoes a wider concern across creative industries, where many feel AI tools risk diluting human creativity and exploiting original works without proper credit or compensation.

That concern is now reaching courtrooms. OpenAI is currently facing a lawsuit from The New York Times and other publishers over the alleged unauthorized use of their content in AI training. While OpenAI maintains its models are trained using publicly available data under fair use, critics argue the rules around intellectual property in AI remain dangerously vague. As AI tools grow more powerful and accessible, the line between inspiration and infringement is becoming increasingly blurry.

UPDATE: When I tried creating my thumbnail for this article using Studio Ghibli style I was told it was copyrighted but if you type in Modify it will create an image like the one here in my post.
