Do you think Buffy The Vampire Slayer can succeed without the involvement of creator Joss Whedon? The embattled director has been shunned from Hollywood after reports of toxic behavior on the series and the feature film Justice League.
Hulu has officially found its next chosen one. Skeleton Crew breakout star Ryan Kiera Armstrong will lead the Untitled Buffyverse Pilot, with Sarah Michelle Gellar returning to the iconic role of Buffy Summers.
The news was confirmed as Gellar, also an executive producer, shared a heartfelt Instagram video revealing the casting. “From the moment I saw Ryan’s audition, I knew there was only one girl I wanted by my side,” said Gellar. “Her emotional intelligence and talent at such a young age is a true gift.”
The pilot, ordered in February, is being developed by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (Poker Face, Fringe) and directed by Chloé Zhao, the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind Nomadland. While details on Armstrong’s slayer character remain under wraps, Gellar hinted at the show's setting by welcoming her co-star to “New Sunnydale,” teasing a rebuilt version of the original series’ demon-plagued town.
Armstrong, known for her role in Skeleton Crew and appearances in American Horror Story and It: Chapter Two, is being hailed by the Zuckerman sisters as “this generation’s slayer.”
The pilot hails from 20th Television and Searchlight TV, with longtime Buffyverse collaborators Gail Berman, Fran and Kaz Kuzui, and Dolly Parton also on board as executive producers.
Stay tuned as Hulu brings new life—and a new slayer—to the beloved Buffy the Vampire Slayer universe. Comment below with what you hope to see for returning characters.
