What is your favorite viral video that broke the Internet?
Seventeen years after it broke the internet, Sarah Silverman is finally shedding light on the secret behind the now-iconic “I’m F---ing Matt Damon” video that blindsided then-boyfriend Jimmy Kimmel.
In a new interview on Where Everybody Knows Your Name with Ted Danson, Silverman reflected on crafting the viral sensation. “I had to lie to Jimmy,” she admitted. “I’m terrible at lying, but I had to commit.” At the time, she was touring in Miami—where Damon happened to be living—and seized the chance to shoot the parody music video with help from Jimmy Kimmel Live! writers Tony Barbieri and Sal Iacono.
With just three hours at a hotel and Damon’s limited schedule—his daughter had a Halloween pageant—the team scrambled to record. The video, with its absurd lyrics and surprise guest star, became one of YouTube’s earliest viral hits and added fuel to the now-legendary faux feud between Damon and Kimmel.
Silverman shared that Kimmel was kept entirely in the dark. “He acted mad,” she said, “but he loved it.” She recalled brushing their teeth before the show and downplaying the video: “Keep your expectations low.”
The comedian, who’s currently promoting her Netflix special PostMortem, says she recently rewatched the clip. “It actually holds up,” she noted. “So much comedy doesn’t, but that one felt evergreen.”
The feud lives on, with Kimmel still famously ending his show with, “Sorry, Matt Damon, we ran out of time.”
