Eleven years ago Yahoo News did a cover story on me for my Star Wars fan film The Force Awakens which was just announced by Lucasfilm would be the name for their newest film. Before reporters were allowed to release the title the reporter did a search which came up to a few websites that was hosting my film. Unfortunately the reporter posted the article before getting a response from Lucasfilm which could of led to a job or some kind of recognition.
Lucasfilm has officially revealed the title and release date for its upcoming film: Star Wars: Starfighter. Directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling, the film is set to premiere in theaters on May 28, 2027, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Star Wars franchise.
The announcement was made during the Star Wars Celebration event in Japan, where Gosling made a surprise appearance. Sharing a personal moment, he displayed a childhood photo featuring Star Wars bed sheets, emphasizing his lifelong connection to the saga. “This script is so good. It’s filled with so much heart and adventure," Gosling said, praising Levy as the perfect choice to helm the story.
Star Wars: Starfighter will be a standalone story, taking place a few years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. The film is currently in pre-production, with filming scheduled to begin in Fall 2025. While further casting details remain under wraps, the project marks a significant milestone in the franchise's ongoing evolution.
Additionally, Lucasfilm confirmed development on several other projects, including a new trilogy by Simon Kinberg and films from acclaimed directors James Mangold, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and Taika Waititi.
Fans can get an early glimpse of Starfighter through a teaser logo released on the official Star Wars channels, fueling excitement for what's shaping up to be a thrilling new chapter in the galaxy far, far away.
