Jon Favreau’s upcoming The Mandalorian & Grogu is shaping up to be the most budget-friendly Star Wars film in over a decade. According to numbers uncovered by Collider on the California Film Commission website, the film has a production budget of $166.4 million.
This makes it significantly cheaper than the most expensive Star Wars movie to date, The Last Jedi, which had a reported budget of $317 million. Other films in the Disney era, such as The Rise of Skywalker and Solo: A Star Wars Story, each cost around $275 million to produce. Even Rogue One, previously the least expensive of the Disney-produced films, had a $200 million budget.
Although The Mandalorian & Grogu surpasses the production costs of the prequel trilogy—which were made for around $115 million each—adjusted for inflation, those films would cost approximately $220 million today. This means that Favreau’s new movie is still a more cost-effective production.
One reason for the lower costs is the film’s production location. Shot in California, the project qualified for tax credits, securing approximately $21.75 million in state incentives.
As the first Star Wars theatrical release since 2019, anticipation is high. Pedro Pascal returns as Din Djarin, joined by Grogu and a star-studded cast featuring Sigourney Weaver, Jeremy Allen White, and Jonny Coyne. Fans can mark their calendars for The Mandalorian & Grogu, which is set to hit theaters on May 22, 2026.
