Tropic Thunder is one film that divides audiences based on your level of sense of humor. Whether you find it a comedy classic or offensive, movies like that aren't made anymore.
Tom Cruise may soon bring back one of his most outrageous characters: Les Grossman. The iconic, foul-mouthed Hollywood executive from 2008’s Tropic Thunder could be headed for his own film, according to Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning director Christopher McQuarrie.
On the “Happy Sad Confused Podcast” with Josh Horowitz, McQuarrie revealed he and Cruise have had “very serious conversations” about a standalone Grossman project. “The conversations we’ve had about Les Grossman are so f---ing funny,” McQuarrie shared. “We’re talking about it, how best to do it. It ultimately comes down to what that character is.”
Les Grossman became a fan-favorite in Tropic Thunder for his explosive tirades, giant hands, and unfiltered Hollywood attitude. Cruise’s unexpected and fully committed performance earned praise — and the character’s cult status has only grown.
McQuarrie noted that during the intense Mission: Impossible shoot, brainstorming Grossman scenes became a creative escape. “Just riffing with Tom as Les Grossman at the breakfast table was one of the real joys of making this movie,” he said.
If Cruise and McQuarrie do move forward, they’ll be building on solid momentum. Their latest Mission: Impossible installment recently delivered a franchise-best $63 million opening weekend, with $77 million over the four-day Memorial Day stretch.
While nothing is officially greenlit yet, Cruise’s passion for Les Grossman suggests the character may finally get his spotlight — in the most chaotic, hilarious way possible.
