Tom Cruise is set to reunite with filmmaker Doug Liman for the upcoming supernatural thriller Deeper. The project, now confirmed by Liman during a recent appearance at a documentary screening, marks the third collaboration between the two after their successful pairings on Edge of Tomorrow and American Made. This time, the duo is diving into new territory—literally and thematically.
A Fresh Frontier for Cruise and Liman
Speaking to Showbiz411, Liman revealed that he and Cruise are gearing up for what he described as a “scary” movie:
“I have never done one, and neither has Tom Cruise.”
With Cruise’s extensive history of action-packed and high-octane roles, Deeper represents a thrilling shift into supernatural horror. Liman’s admission that both he and Cruise are entering unfamiliar territory only adds to the intrigue surrounding this project.
A Decade in Development
The script for Deeper, written by Max Landis, has been circulating in Hollywood for over a decade. Originally, Baltasar Kormakur (Everest) was slated to direct, but the project eventually landed in Liman’s capable hands. Now under the Warner Bros. Pictures banner, the film is gaining momentum.
The Plot: Supernatural Terrors Beneath the Surface
Deeper follows a disgraced former astronaut who accepts a mission to pilot a submersible to the ocean’s deepest, newly discovered trench. What begins as an exploration of uncharted waters quickly turns ominous, as supernatural phenomena escalate the closer he gets to the trench’s bottom. The protagonist must confront not only the mysterious forces surrounding him but also his own demons in this claustrophobic and terrifying setting.
Cruise’s Packed Schedule
Tom Cruise, fresh off filming Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, is no stranger to juggling high-profile projects. He’s currently working on Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Judy and has a busy slate ahead. Following a promotional tour for his final Mission: Impossible film in Spring 2025, Cruise will move on to Chris McQuarrie’s Broadsword later in the year.
Meanwhile, Cruise and Liman also have a space-set movie with NASA in development, though the status of that ambitious project remains uncertain.
Anticipation Builds
With its blend of psychological tension and supernatural thrills, Deeper promises to be a departure from Cruise and Liman’s previous work. Fans of the duo’s past collaborations are eager to see how they tackle this genre, and the long-awaited project’s revival only amplifies expectations.
