A few months ago I had an article about the chances of Days Of Thunder 2 being a crossover with F1 as Joseph Kosinski has a connection with both Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise.
Cruise may be known for his high-octane action roles and daredevil stunts, but even he needed to blow off steam during the intense production of 1994’s Interview with the Vampire. Speaking at Paramount’s CinemaCon presentation, Cruise shared a nostalgic and surprising memory involving his co-star Brad Pitt — and go-karts.
“Brad’s got a new movie with Jerry Bruckheimer and Joe Kosinski. I can’t wait to see that this summer,” Cruise said, referring to Pitt’s upcoming racing drama F1, where Pitt plays a retired Formula 1 driver making a comeback. “It’s great to see Brad driving,” he added. “He’s very good.”
Cruise’s praise didn’t come from watching Pitt on screen — it came from firsthand experience. “When we were doing Interview with the Vampire, we’d go and race go-karts. We’d literally finish and go drive go-karts all night,” he said. “Believe me, I’ve raced against him.”
Though the gothic film — based on Anne Rice’s acclaimed novel — is full of brooding, blood, and eternal torment, the off-screen moments sound much lighter. Pitt, who played the melancholic Louis, has previously called the shoot “miserable,” citing the long, dark filming conditions. Still, Cruise clearly looks back on it with more fondness, especially when it comes to his camaraderie with Pitt.
It’s a fun twist that while their characters never shared a joyride, Cruise’s Lestat does close the film in a flashy convertible, echoing their shared love for speed.
Brad Pitt’s F1 races into theaters on June 27 — and with Cruise’s seal of approval, expectations are sky-high.
