What is your favorite movie from the Sony Spider-Man Universe? Venom? Morbius? Kraven The Hunter? Madame Web? Well if your like me you wondered why there never was a Spider-Man in the universe since it would actually feel like it connected to the larger MCU.
Tom Hardy has finally spoken out on The Discourse Podcast about the long-rumored crossover between his Venom and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. According to Hardy, the dream project was “as close as I could possibly imagine getting” before it fell apart due to what he vaguely described as studio politics.
“We got close,” Hardy said. “Apart from doing a film together, which I would have loved to have done, because that just means so much fun.”
While Hardy stopped short of naming names or detailing what went wrong, podcast host Mike DeAngelo suggested it was internal studio decisions that killed the idea—something Hardy all but confirmed.
The British actor, who first played the symbiote antihero in 2018’s Venom, expressed disappointment for fans—especially younger ones—who have long wanted to see the two characters share the screen. “I think I’m constantly reminded by children how important these characters are,” Hardy said. “They don’t know why their favorite characters aren’t in films together.”
The Venom franchise was originally set up to merge with the MCU at some point. Director Ruben Fleischer even said in 2019 that a Spider-Man showdown was “where it’s all going to lead.” But due to the tangled web of rights between Sony and Marvel Studios, it never fully materialized.
Despite the letdown, Hardy remains proud of what he and his team accomplished. “We were given a set of boundaries... but we poured all of ourselves into it within the limits,” he said, reflecting on the trilogy that concluded with Venom: The Last Dance in 2025.
As for a potential future? Hardy hasn’t closed the door. “I would love to fight Spider-Man. I’m happy to fight Spider-Man today, 100 percent. I would never say never.”
Fans may not have seen the battle they hoped for, but the love for Hardy’s Venom—and the possibility of a surprise return—still lingers.
