Akiva Goldsman Won't Kill The Dog Again In "I Am Legend 2"
Who is your favorite dog in a film? I'm going with Nanook the Malamute in "The Lost Boys" and Boomer the Golden Retriever in "Independence Day." Are there any more iconic scenes than Nanook jumping on the Vampire into the bathtub of garlic and holy water and Boomer jumping to safety from the alien's fireball?
Good news for dog lovers. Screenwriter Akiva Goldsman is promising that the Dog won't die again in 'I Am Legend 2.' If you remember in the first film, Will Smith's Robert Neville had to put down his German Shepherd Sam after his dog loyally saved him from Zombie dogs before getting infected themselves.
Goldsman told the Radio Times about the criticism he faced: "I fear that I would not survive the backlash should we kill another dog. I’d like to point out that between the opening shot and the next shot, we killed almost everybody on the planet. That was OK. You kill one dog – I’ve never had more walkouts during test screenings."
Fans have been waiting since 2007 for a sequel, with Smith and Michael B. Jordan signed on for the last few years to team up again with Goldsman and director Steven Caple Jr. taking over from Francis Lawrence (Constantine).
Goldsman further said he wouldn't quit: "I have run up against a series of obstacles that I refuse to allow to defeat me. That is the truth of that one. We’re pressing on. We’re trying. We’re doing everything we can to get it made."
