"Dawson's Creek": Kevin Williamson Apologized To Busy Phillips For Series Finale Snub

The recent table read of the 'Dawson's Creek' pilot to benefit James Van Der Beek's cancer treatment also helped heal a fracture between creator Kevin Williamson and star Busy Phillips. Williamson left at the end of the second season, and Phillips joined in season 5 as Audrey Liddell, which caused a conflict when Williamson left her out of the series finale after he was asked back to write it in season 6.

Phillips recently opened up about the situation on the Pod Meets World podcast: “What I heard at the time was Kevin was like, ‘I don’t know this character. I didn’t create her, so she’s not going to be in the finale. It was a thing that really hurt my feelings, and I felt like I had given two seasons of my life to this show. People really loved my character. I really gave up a big part of my life to be in Wilmington.”

According to Phillips, Williamson personally apologized to her for leaving her out of it, where her character was instead mentioned to be on tour as a backup singer for John Mayer. Phillips said: “He was just like, ‘I was just in a moment in my career, my life, when like I had so many things going on. They had asked me at the very last minute to come back and write the finale. I had like a day and a half to do it, and I just made this kind of weird decision and I could have done better and I didn’t, and I’m sorry.'"
