Rick Flag Sr.’s Rise To Power And Revenge

Frank Grillo is stepping into a significant role in James Gunn’s revamped DC Universe, starting with his animated debut in Creature Commandos and expanding into live-action projects like Superman: Legacy and Peacemaker Season 2. Portraying Rick Flag Sr., the father of Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flag Jr., Grillo’s character has a powerful narrative arc filled with revenge, leadership, and conflict. Here's everything we know so far.

Rick Flag Sr.: From Boots on the Ground to the Helm of A.R.G.U.S.

Grillo’s character debuts on December 5th in Creature Commandos, sporting the iconic uniform and establishing his role in the DC Universe. But it’s his live-action appearances that will solidify Rick Flag Sr.’s impact.

According to Grillo, Flag Sr. is taking over as the head of A.R.G.U.S., replacing Amanda Waller (Viola Davis). While Waller has been a central figure in the DC Extended Universe, her presumed absence allows Flag Sr. to step into a new leadership role. However, this transition comes with added complexities, as Grillo explained in an interview with GamesRadar:

“I go from being boots on the ground badass to now being in charge, which enables me to find out the truth about my son... It just makes my passion for revenge even stronger.”

This duality between administrative power and personal vendetta will define Flag Sr.’s journey, especially as he navigates the fallout from his son’s death in The Suicide Squad.

A Tense Encounter with Peacemaker

Rick Flag Sr.’s personal vendetta against Peacemaker (John Cena) serves as a pivotal storyline in Peacemaker Season 2. As fans will remember, Chris Smith (Peacemaker) killed Rick Flag Jr. in The Suicide Squad, a moment that remains one of the film’s most emotional and controversial scenes.

Grillo hinted at a climactic showdown between his character and Cena’s Peacemaker, describing it as an emotionally charged confrontation:

“John Cena and I have a pretty serious epic scene that culminates with all this anger.”

While revenge drives Flag Sr., Grillo noted the complexity of balancing vengeance with his duty to the greater good:

“It’s a big responsibility, and so I have to be careful so that it doesn’t go too far, which has been fun as an actor to balance.”

Expanding the DC Universe

Grillo’s role as Rick Flag Sr. isn’t just limited to Peacemaker. He’s also slated to appear in Superman: Legacy, set for release on July 11, 2025, further weaving his character into the broader narrative of Gunn’s DC Universe. Additionally, there’s speculation that he could appear in the upcoming Waller TV series, reinforcing his centrality to A.R.G.U.S. and its operations.

Marvel Universe

Frank Grillo is no stranger to the superhero genre, having previously made a mark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Brock Rumlow, aka Crossbones. His portrayal of the rogue Hydra operative-turned-villain spanned multiple films, including Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, where his intense physicality and menacing presence left a lasting impression.

Now stepping into the DC Universe as Rick Flag Sr., Grillo joins a rare group of actors who have successfully crossed between Marvel and DC, showcasing his versatility as an actor. This transition highlights the evolving nature of superhero storytelling, where actors like Grillo bring their depth and experience from one iconic franchise to another, adding richness to both worlds while thrilling fans of each universe.

What’s Next?

With Creature Commandos premiering on December 5th, fans won’t have to wait long to see Rick Flag Sr.’s animated debut. Following this, Superman: Legacy and Peacemaker Season 2 will build on the character’s arc, with themes of revenge, leadership, and redemption taking center stage.

Frank Grillo’s portrayal of Rick Flag Sr. promises to bring a blend of intensity and depth to the DC Universe, offering a fresh perspective on A.R.G.U.S.’s role in the unfolding saga. Whether he’s wearing the boots of a soldier or the suit of a leader, Grillo’s performance is shaping up to be a cornerstone of James Gunn’s vision for DC.
