Director Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick) is reportedly in talks to helm a new Miami Vice film for Universal Pictures, with Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler) penning the script. The news, first reported by insider Daniel Richtman, suggests the stylish crime saga could soon roar back to life — again.

This would mark the second cinematic take on Miami Vice, following Michael Mann’s 2006 version starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell. Though panned at release, that gritty reboot has since gained cult status for its moody realism and brutal tone. However, it traded the pastel suits and neon-soaked glamour of the '80s TV series for a dark, brooding aesthetic that felt more Newark than South Beach.

The original Miami Vice series, created by Mann in the '80s, was credited with revitalizing Miami’s South Beach, transforming it into a pop culture hotspot. Its use of contemporary music, sleek visuals, and breezy tone defined an era. The 2006 film, by contrast, stripped away the vibrancy in favor of a raw, almost documentary-style atmosphere.

It remains unclear whether this new version is a full reboot or a continuation. There’s no confirmation if Foxx or Farrell will return as Tubbs and Crockett — though that seems unlikely, given the original film’s lukewarm box office performance.

Kosinski, currently finishing his Brad Pitt-starring Formula 1 film and an Apple whistleblower thriller, brings a sleek, cinematic style that could reimagine Miami Vice for a new generation — perhaps with just a bit more sunshine this time.
