Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos recently opened up about the company's past collaboration with Marvel Television, describing it as the "biggest deal in the history of television" but also a challenging experience due to clashing priorities.

Back in 2013, Netflix and Marvel struck a historic deal to produce five original TV series—Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and the crossover miniseries The Defenders. While the shows were successful and even led to The Punisher spin-off, Sarandos revealed that working with Marvel Television was far from smooth.

In a recent interview with Variety, Sarandos explained, “Our incentives were not well aligned. We wanted to make great television; they wanted to make money.” He described constant battles with Marvel’s previous leadership, led by Jeph Loeb and Isaac Perlmutter, over production budgets. According to Sarandos, Marvel’s tight spending habits often resulted in creative compromises, leading to repeated conflicts whenever Netflix wanted to enhance the quality of its shows.

Despite the tension, the Defenders shows left a lasting impact. Daredevil in particular was widely acclaimed and ultimately led to the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again reboot. However, in 2018, Netflix canceled all its Marvel series as Disney+ entered the streaming landscape. Marvel Television was later dismantled and reorganized under Marvel Studios, with Kevin Feige taking full control.

Sarandos’ reflections highlight the ever-present struggle between financial constraints and creative ambition in Hollywood. While Marvel’s Netflix era had its flaws, it still laid the groundwork for some of the most beloved Marvel characters to thrive in live-action.
