The MMA world has been buzzing with speculation about a potential crossover fight between two of the biggest names in the sport: Jon Jones and Francis Ngannou. This heavyweight clash, once a pipe dream due to contractual disputes, might finally become a reality thanks to the involvement of Saudi Arabia and its ambitions in the global sports arena.
Jon Jones, widely regarded as the MMA GOAT and the current UFC heavyweight champion, was set to face Francis Ngannou, the former UFC heavyweight kingpin, in what could have been the fight of the century. However, Ngannou's departure from the UFC to join the Professional Fighters League (PFL) left fans disheartened, as negotiations for their matchup fell apart.
But hope is not lost. Recent developments suggest that the fight could be back on the table, facilitated by Saudi Arabia's growing investment in marquee sporting events. Both the PFL and UFC have close ties with Saudi stakeholders, and the kingdom’s desire to host globally renowned sporting events could bridge the gap between the two organizations.
In a revealing conversation with TalkSport, PFL CEO Peter Murray highlighted Saudi Arabia's interest in the potential matchup. “We’re supportive of a [crossover fight],” Murray stated. “I mean, the fighters want the fight, Jon Jones wants the fight, Francis wants the fight, we want the fight, our partners here in Saudi want the fight. It really comes down to if UFC wants to step up … period.”
From the PFL's perspective, the door is wide open. Francis Ngannou has already expressed his readiness to take on Jones, and Saudi backing ensures that finances are not a hurdle. The biggest obstacle remains Dana White and the UFC’s willingness to collaborate. White has previously voiced his disinterest in working with Ngannou following his departure. However, the financial and global exposure potential of a fight in Saudi Arabia might make refusal difficult.
Riyadh Season, an annual celebration in Saudi Arabia that has played host to significant sporting and entertainment events, could provide the perfect stage for this monumental clash. With the stars seemingly aligning and mutual interest from all sides except UFC’s management, fans are holding their breath for what could be the most anticipated heavyweight bout in MMA history.
Whether or not this fight happens, the possibility alone signals a new era in MMA, where cross-promotional super-fights could become more feasible under the influence of major global stakeholders. For now, fans will have to wait and see if Saudi money can indeed work its magic.
