Alex Ovechkin is closing in on NHL immortality, needing just seven more goals to surpass Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record of 894. But when that historic moment finally comes, the NHL plans to keep things surprisingly brief.
According to insider Chris Johnston, the league will pause the game for a real-time ceremony when Ovechkin scores goal number 895—but it’ll be capped at just seven minutes. While the moment will be monumental, the NHL is clearly focused on maintaining the flow of the game, especially if Ovi breaks the record during a competitive matchup.
This limit is part of meticulous behind-the-scenes planning already underway. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and Wayne Gretzky himself are expected to travel with the Washington Capitals once Ovechkin gets within four goals of the record. They won’t be alone—15 league officials will be in tow, ready to witness and coordinate the historic moment in person.
Despite the record chase, the Capitals' own playoff positioning is relatively secure, giving them room to fully embrace the celebration. If Ovechkin ties the record—possibly against the Hurricanes on April 10—the plan is for a smaller, team-only acknowledgment on the ice, similar to previous milestones like his 800th and 802nd goals.
But once the record falls—potentially April 12 in Columbus—the NHL intends to make it a true spectacle, albeit a swift one.
With just 12 games left and seven goals to go, hockey fans everywhere are holding their breath. Ovechkin is on the verge of redefining greatness, and though the league might keep the clock ticking, history will stand still for those unforgettable seven minutes.
