Denis Leary Shares Funny Wayne Gretzky Story On Where He Stores His Trophies

Who is your favorite athlete? Mine in each sport is Wayne Gretzky in hockey, Andre Agassi in tennis, Tom Brady in football, Larry Bird in basketball, Darryl Strawberry in baseball, and Nate Diaz in MMA.

Actor Denis Leary (Rescue Me) was on The Rich Eisen Show, where he shared a "great" story on where hockey superstar Wayne Gretzky stores his trophies. Here is the transcript edited for clarity:

Rich: Did you say in the back that you had a great Wayne Gretzky story?

Denis: Years ago, this was back when Wayne was with the Kings, I used to skate in this pickup game Jerry Bruckheimer runs. Sunday and Monday nights, just pickup. Chris Chelios, Gretzky, a few NHL guys would skate in August to get ready for camp. Wayne says to me, “Hey, when the season starts, if you’re in town, you want to come down and skate with the Kings?”I’m like, “Yeah, I’d love to.” So months later, I’m in L.A. The night before, I’m at Wayne’s house with a friend from Toronto. Great hockey player. We’re having a couple of beers. My friend says, “I’d love to play tomorrow, but I didn’t bring my stuff” because Wayne invited him. Wayne goes, “What size skate are you? I’ve got skates in the garage.”

So we go into the garage. By the way, the house is beautiful, but there’s no sports stuff anywhere. No Gretzky things. Just artwork. No trophies.

Rich: Un huh.

Denis: We get to the garage, it’s a two- or three-car garage. Boxes everywhere. Shelves stacked. Wayne’s like, “Check that box.” I open it. I go, “This is a trophy.”He goes, “Oh yeah, that’s the Hart Trophy. Try that one.” I open another. I go, “What is this?”He goes, “Oh, that’s another MVP trophy.” I’m like, “Why is this stuff out here?”He goes, “Oh, she won’t let me put that stuff in the house.”

Rich: Wow.

Denis: That’s Wayne Gretzky. The Great One. He pulls out a pair of skates and gives them to my friend, and I’m just thinking, this is crazy.

Rich: Meanwhile, above the mantle in the house? A big Flamingo Kids movie poster (a movie Gretzky's wife, Janet Jones, starred in).

Denis: Yeah. Exactly. That’s just the way it goes, man. Happy wife, happy life.
