Detroit Lions Withdraw NFL Playoff Reseeding Proposal Amid Owner Resistance

My favorite football team Tampa Bay Buccaneers the past few seasons made the playoffs by winning the NFC South division even though other teams had better records which for some fans isn't right.
The Detroit Lions have officially withdrawn their proposal to reseed the NFL playoffs, just before the latest round of league meetings in Eagan, Minnesota resumed.
The proposed bylaw aimed to boost competition in the final weeks of the regular season. It would have ensured only the division winner with the best record in each conference earned a guaranteed home playoff game. All other teams, including division winners, would have been seeded purely by overall record.
However, the initiative did not gain enough traction among team owners. Notably, Steelers head coach and competition committee member Mike Tomlin voiced his opposition early on. “I'm a division purist,” Tomlin stated during the April meetings. “I love the rivalries that are division play. I think the division winner should get a home playoff game.”
While the NFL has shown ongoing interest in increasing the competitiveness of Week 18 and potentially transitioning to an 18-game regular season, the lack of support led the Lions to pull the proposal before it reached a formal vote.
Still, this may not be the end of the conversation. With evolving scheduling priorities and the league's continued focus on maximizing fan engagement, playoff reseeding could re-emerge in future discussions.
