I have seen some of the best horror films are ones with a low budget that forces the writer and director use clever tricks to bring the scares. Grave Encounters 2 is one such film that is a favorite of mine for not only filming at Riverview Hospital in Vancouver but using it as an actual location. Everything from X-Files to Supernatural has filmed at the old hospital that is reportedly haunted. I have worked many nights there and while I haven't had an experience many crew have.
After years of speculation, fans of the Happy Death Day franchise finally have a reason to celebrate. Jessica Rothe, who stars as the iconic Tree Gelbman, recently confirmed that the long-anticipated third film is officially “moving forward.” The exciting news came during a special double-feature screening of the first two movies at the American Cinematheque, where director Christopher Landon echoed her announcement, saying simply but firmly: “It is moving forward.”
The original Happy Death Day hit theaters in 2017, instantly gaining a cult following by blending slasher horror with time-loop comedy in a style reminiscent of Groundhog Day. With sharp writing, clever twists, and Rothe’s standout performance, the film raked in $125 million globally on a tiny $4.8 million budget.
In 2019, the sequel Happy Death Day 2U shifted gears with a more emotional and sci-fi-oriented storyline. Although it didn’t quite match the original’s financial or critical success—grossing $64 million on a $9 million budget—it deepened the mythology and built a loyal fan base eager for a trilogy capper.
While official details about the third film are still under wraps, Landon had previously teased a working title of Happy Death Day to Us, suggesting a tonal shift that could bring something fresh to the series. With Landon currently promoting his latest thriller Drop, which hits theaters this Friday, we may hear more updates soon.
