Who is your favorite MMA fighter? I'm going old school and saying Tank Abbott. Then it was Tito Ortiz, and finally Nate Diaz. Now the sport has become so diluted by weekly events that while I still watch with friends the big events, they have lost the big stars in Brock Lesnar, Jon Jones, and recently Conor McGregor.
Good news for fans of Jon Jones, the embittered UFC GOAT. Mark Wahlberg at the UFC 330 event teased a biopic film about his life with his co-star, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, of his latest film 'By Any Means.' Yeah, the one where Wahlberg plays a Mafia hitman who teams up with an FBI agent to rid the world of racists.
Wahlberg told commentators Chris Weidman and Din Thomas: "Yahya and I were just talking. He knows I played Micky Ward in a biopic, but this guy looks more like Jon Jones than Jon Jones. We just started talking about this idea. Jon, if you’re into the idea, I’ll produce the movie. Yahya, there is no other actor who could play him like this [with] the physicality that he has. We played baseball today at Philly’s Park. We played basketball. He was dunking and hitting home runs over there. This guy is a serious athlete."
I have to be honest, Abdul-Mateen II and Jones could pass for twins, and both are in amazing shape, but I suspect Wahlberg's statements were more just fan wishing than something in serious development. Jones would be a great onscreen antihero, from his multiple arrests, including a hit-and-run on a pregnant woman, to his legendary fights where he became the greatest fighter in the history of the sport.
